BBC Hails ‘Suthra Punjab’ as Global Model for Modern Waste Management

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s “Suthra Punjab” cleanliness model has gained international recognition, with the BBC declaring it a replicable global model after COP30, Forbes, and Bloomberg highlighting the initiative.

According to the BBC, the Suthra Punjab waste management model has reached the UK city of Birmingham, where local volunteer groups sought guidance from Punjab to address long-standing sanitation issues.

For the first time, a British city adopted insights from a Pakistani provincial programme to improve its cleanliness system.

The report said the Suthra Punjab model proved effective in tackling overflowing waste bins in Birmingham.

A digital partnership between volunteers in Punjab and the UK helped challenge assumptions and introduced practical, community-driven solutions.

British volunteers told the BBC that learning from Punjab made them realise that responsibility and civic engagement had weakened despite living in developed societies.

The BBC noted that contact between British volunteers and the Suthra Punjab team was established during COP30 in Brazil, where the programme was showcased at the Pakistan Pavilion.

Following this, the Lahore Waste Management Company CEO held online meetings with UK volunteers to share Punjab’s waste management strategies and solutions tailored to local challenges.

The broadcaster said Punjab’s modern waste management system has earned strong international appreciation, positioning Suthra Punjab as a leading example of effective, community-based urban sanitation reform.
