Former England all-rounder David Willey says the sense of stability and assured opportunities offered by the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is increasingly drawing foreign players away from the Indian Premier League (IPL).
According to Willey, the PSL’s smaller size works in its favor, as it often guarantees regular match involvement for overseas players. In contrast, the IPL’s packed squads can leave even high-profile names spending weeks on the bench.
His comments follow recent decisions by several international stars to prioritize the PSL. Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis and ex-England all-rounder Moeen Ali have both confirmed they will skip the IPL to feature in Pakistan’s premier T20 league.
Australian power-hitter Glenn Maxwell, a long-time IPL regular, has also opted not to enter the IPL auction and is reportedly considering a return to the PSL.
Speaking to reporters, Willey said player choices vary from case to case, but uncertainty around the IPL auction plays a major role. He explained that many players value the predictability the PSL offers, particularly when it comes to selection and playing time.
“You never really know how the IPL auction will unfold,” Willey said. “With the PSL, there’s often more clarity and reassurance for players. Depending on personal circumstances, some feel they’re more likely to actually get on the field in the PSL rather than spend 10 or 11 weeks on the sidelines, and that can be a big deciding factor.”
