The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly decided to relieve Pakistan Test captain, Shan Masood, from his role as Consultant for International Cricket.
Sources indicate that it was deemed unfeasible for an active international player to manage both on-field duties and board-level responsibilities. Both the PCB and Shan have agreed to part ways in this capacity.
Since his appointment, Shan has remained active on the field. He participated in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy after the South Africa series and also played matches in the President’s One Day Cup before traveling to the United States.
Shan’s appointment in October as Consultant for International Cricket and Players’ Affairs was a first in Pakistan cricket history, making him the first active player to take on an administrative role while still representing the national team. The move reportedly came at the suggestion of PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
The decision emerged during a period of restructuring within PCB’s international operations. Just a month before Shan’s appointment, the Board had suspended Director of International Cricket Usman Wahla following allegations of delays in forwarding critical correspondence to the International Cricket Council (ICC) during the 2025 Asia Cup controversy.
Insiders claim Wahla’s failure to relay an official letter regarding the “handshake incident” between Pakistan and India caused frustration among PCB leadership, triggering disciplinary action and a search for his successor.
However, the exact responsibilities Shan Masood would have assumed remained unclear, as the consultant role was not officially defined.
With PCB now leaning toward prioritizing Shan Masood’s on-field career, it appears the experiment of an active player handling both cricket and consultancy duties will not move forward.
