The government plans to complete the Rs. 14 billion Kutchery Chowk remodeling project ahead of schedule and is also constructing a Rs. 1.6 billion parking plaza in Jinnah Park, formerly known as Bhutto Park.
Divisional Commissioner Amir Khattak shared the details during a press briefing at the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation offices on Tuesday. Punjab Highway Department Superintendent Engineer Rao Tahir and other senior officials accompanied him.
Officials said the Kutchery Chowk remodeling project is part of the signal free corridor from Ammar Chowk to Motorway Chowk.
They said the government is spending Rs. 3.9 billion on the Jinnah Park and Annexe Chowk flyover and underpass, Rs. 5.9 billion on the Kutchery Chowk underpass and flyover, and Rs. 2.6 billion on the Iftikhar Janjua Chowk underpass.
The project covers a total of 31 kanals of land. The commissioner said the project had an 18 month completion timeline under the agreement, but the government decided to speed up work to reduce inconvenience to the public.
He said authorities aim to finish the project by May 31 and have deployed double shift work to accelerate progress without compromising quality.
He added that the project aims to improve traffic flow and eliminate problems caused by roadside parking. Authorities are building a parking plaza in Jinnah Park and have sent proposals for five more parking plazas, including in Saddar and Cantonment areas.
