Google Launches Gemini 3 Flash as a Faster AI Model

Google has introduced updates to its Gemini lineup of AI models with the launch of Gemini 3 Flash, following the introduction of Gemini 3 Pro last month. The new model is designed for speed and is now positioned as the default option across several Google services.

Unlike Gemini 3 Pro, which is meant to take longer for more complex queries, Gemini 3 Flash is the general-purpose, fast responding AI for less complex questions.

Google said Gemini 3 Flash was built specifically for fast responses and is intended to feel as quick as a standard Google search for most prompts. The company described it as a speed-focused model created from the ground up to deliver rapid results.

Gemini 3 Flash is now the default model in the Gemini app. Users who select the “Fast” or “Thinking” options are using Gemini 3 Flash, while Gemini 3 Pro is activated only when users choose the “Pro” option.

Gemini 3 Flash vs Gemini 3 Pro

Google said Gemini 3 Pro remains the preferred option for advanced tasks such as complex mathematics and coding. However, the company said Gemini 3 Flash is suitable for most everyday use cases.

Flash is also more efficient in terms of computing resources, which helps explain Google’s decision to promote it as the default option. In benchmark testing, Google said Gemini 3 Flash performs significantly better than its predecessor, Gemini 2.5 Flash, and matches OpenAI’s GPT-5.2 in some tests. It also outperforms Gemini 2.5 Pro in certain benchmarks while delivering much faster response times.

Gemini 3 Flash Comes to Google Search

Gemini 3 Flash has also become the default model powering Google Search’s AI Mode worldwide. Google said this change improves AI Mode’s ability to understand nuanced questions and account for multiple constraints when generating structured responses.

Gemini 3 Pro and Image Tools in Search

Gemini 3 Pro is also available within Google Search’s AI Mode, but only for users in the US. To access it, users must select “Thinking with 3 Pro” from the AI Mode model menu. Google said this option provides more detailed assistance, including visual layouts with interactive tools and simulations.

Google has also made Nano Banana 3 Pro available in Search for US users. To use it, users must select “Thinking with 3 Pro” in AI Mode and then choose “Create Images Pro.” The company has not announced changes to simplify the growing list of AI model options.
