The introduction of the e-challan system in Hyderabad has triggered a sharp surge in helmet prices, leaving commuters complaining of “double punishment” on the roads.
After Karachi, traffic authorities have now launched e-challans in Sindh’s second-largest city, enforcing heavy fines on riders without helmets.
As soon as the drive began, demand for helmets spiked, and local shopkeepers reportedly increased prices overnight, with some residents claiming rates have effectively doubled.
Citizens say they rushed to buy helmets to avoid penalties but were instead met with inflated price tags, accusing traders of taking advantage of the situation.
Residents also questioned the government’s priorities, pointing out that while digital fines were implemented quickly, Hyderabad’s roads remain in poor condition. Many key routes are dug up or partially damaged, making daily travel difficult and unsafe.
Locals argue that if authorities are serious about road safety, they must act against profiteering, keep helmet prices in check, and repair major roads, instead of limiting their focus to issuing e-challans.
