A man lost his life in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) after falling from a chairlift over the Indus River in the Taraiz Banda area of Lower Kohistan.
Rescue officials said the victim, 42-year-old Abdul Wakeel, had just helped his son get off the locally operated chairlift, commonly called a doli, when the incident occurred.
The lift, which is used to move passengers and goods across the river in the Jalkot area, reportedly developed a technical fault and suddenly started moving backwards.
“As the chairlift slipped in reverse, he lost his balance and fell hundreds of feet down towards the riverside,” Rescue 1122 official Malik Sharif told reporters.
Local residents, along with Rescue 1122 staff, launched an operation to recover the body from the rocky riverbank. The deceased was shifted to a nearby hospital, where medico-legal procedures were completed before the body was handed over to his family.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of improvised chairlifts and cable crossings in remote mountainous regions, where such systems are often the only link between villages and main roads.
