The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet has approved the division of Swat into two districts, with the newly carved-out district to be known as Bar Swat (Bar Swat district).
Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Information, Shafi Jan, announced the decision after the cabinet meeting, confirming that the proposal for Bar Swat district was unanimously approved.
According to Shafi Jan, the headquarters of Bar Swat district will be Tehsil Matta. The new district will comprise three tehsils:
- Matta (district headquarters)
- Khwaza Khela
- Bahrain, which has been designated as a tourism-focused tehsil, given its popularity as a travel destination
The move effectively splits the existing Swat district into an upper and lower administrative structure, with Bar Swat expected to handle governance and development in key mountainous and tourist-heavy areas.
