Islamabad has introduced its first pelican pedestrian crossings on Constitution Avenue, marking a new step toward improving pedestrian safety in the federal capital.
Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) Muhammad Ali Randhawa announced the development in a post on X, saying the crossings have been installed in front of the Secretariat.
He also shared videos of the newly installed crossings and stated that more such initiatives would be launched soon across the city.

Pelican crossings are pedestrian light-controlled crossings that allow people to cross roads safely through signal coordination with vehicular traffic. The installation on Constitution Avenue represents the first use of this system in Islamabad.
The move comes days after a similar initiative was announced in Lahore, where the Traffic Engineering and Transport Planning Agency (TEPA) approved the installation of pelican traffic signals at 20 major roads. Lahore authorities said the project followed a successful pilot on Mall Road and aimed to improve pedestrian mobility, traffic flow, and road safety.
Under the Lahore plan, LED lights linked to traffic signals would be installed at zebra crossings and integrated with the Smart City system to record and analyze traffic data. Islamabad’s newly installed pelican crossings reflect a growing focus on pedestrian safety and modern traffic management in major cities.
