The National Information Technology Board (NITB) has reported a major expansion in digital health services under the One Patient One ID system at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad, between July and November 2025.
According to NITB statistics, 813,361 patients were registered at PIMS registration counters during the five-month period using the unified digital platform. The figures reflect large-scale adoption of centralized patient identification at one of Pakistan’s busiest tertiary care hospitals.
Emergency and diagnostic services also recorded high volumes. Data shows that 387,610 patients were managed at emergency counters, while 1,518,360 laboratory tests were conducted during the reporting period. In addition, 220,067 radiology tests were performed, indicating increased reliance on digitized records to manage patient flow and diagnostic processes across departments.
Hospital utilization data further shows that 29,677 patients were admitted to inpatient departments (IPD) during the same timeframe. To support system implementation, more than 2,000 PIMS staff members received classroom and on-the-job training. As a result, the average patient waiting time for medical reports was reduced to three to four hours.
Daily outpatient department (OPD) flow increased to between 5,000 and 7,500 patients, while emergency departments handled between 1,500 and 2,500 patients per day.
One Patient One ID is a nationwide digital health initiative that assigns a single, unique identifier to each patient, enabling access to complete medical records across healthcare facilities in Pakistan. Under the system, a citizen’s Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) number functions as a permanent medical record number, allowing healthcare providers to retrieve patient histories, including tests, diagnoses, treatments, and prescriptions, regardless of location.
The initiative aims to centralize health data, reduce duplication of medical tests, and improve continuity of care. It also supports telemedicine services and evidence-based public health planning. Officials state that the system improves administrative efficiency, transparency, and data security, and is a key component of the federal government’s broader health digitization drive being implemented in coordination with NADRA, with PIMS serving as a major early implementation site.
