Pakistani Consulate in US Warns Against Visa Scam Stealing Personal and Financial Information

The Pakistani Consulate in Los Angeles has issued a strong warning regarding a fraudulent message circulating online, falsely claiming to be an “important notice” about Pakistan visas. Authorities confirmed that the message is part of a phishing scam designed to steal personal and financial details from unsuspecting individuals.

The consulate’s official website displayed a notice confirming the scam and distancing itself from any unauthorized individuals or entities involved in the fraudulent activity. The Pakistan Embassy in Washington also issued a statement, clarifying that the consulate disassociates itself from such scams and will not be held accountable for any consequences resulting from engagement with the fraudsters.

The scam message, which appears to come from the consulate, urges visa applicants to provide sensitive information through unauthorized links. These links are not connected to the government of Pakistan, and any personal data submitted through them could be exploited for identity theft, financial fraud, or unauthorized transactions.

Officials warned that the fraudsters are seeking critical details such as passport information, social security numbers, bank account details, and credit card data. These can then be misused for criminal activities, including identity theft and financial fraud.

The consulate emphasized that all Pakistani visa applications must be submitted only via the official online portal: https://visa.nadra.gov.pk. Applicants were strongly urged to avoid intermediaries or unauthorized agents, who may promise faster processing times or special access.

Visa seekers were also cautioned against sharing personal or financial information through suspicious platforms. Requests for sensitive details, such as social security numbers or bank information, should be treated as major red flags.

The consulate encouraged the public to verify any visa-related information through official channels and report any suspicious websites or communications to the relevant authorities. “This advisory is issued to protect applicants from scams that can lead to severe financial and personal consequences,” the consulate stated.

For updated visa guidance and official information, applicants are advised to visit the consulate’s website at https://pakconsulatela.org/visa-services.

The warning comes at a time when online fraud is on the rise globally. According to the US Federal Trade Commission, American consumers reported losing over $12.5 billion to fraud in 2024, with phishing and identity theft being major contributors. These scams continue to target vulnerable individuals, and the theft of personal information leads to widespread financial losses.

In Pakistan, cybersecurity researchers documented an 18% increase in phishing attacks in 2024, as criminals exploited deceptive links and spoofed communications to steal sensitive data.

In the US and other countries, courts have sentenced individuals involved in multi-million-dollar phishing schemes, where victims lost substantial amounts of money through impersonation and deceptive tactics.

Officials highlighted that some victims of these scams have lost their entire life savings, with stolen data being used to access bank accounts, acquire fraudulent loans, or execute unauthorized transfers. The consulate’s warning serves as a crucial reminder to remain vigilant against these growing threats.
