Latest World Test Championship Table After England Finally Win a Test Match in Australia

For the first time in 15 years, England have won a Test match in Australia, ending a long drought that included 16 defeats and two draws on Australian soil.

England’s four-wicket victory in the fourth Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground marked their first win of the tour.

The match ended inside two days, with England successfully chasing a target of 175. Chasing a modest target of 175 on a difficult surface, England’s batters played positively to avoid late drama and crossed the line with six wickets lost.

England were bowled out for 110 in the first innings, with Harry Brook top-scoring with 41. Australia’s bowlers shared the damage, as Michael Neser claimed four for 45 and Scott Boland picked up three for 30. Australia responded with 152, thanks largely to Neser’s 35, while Josh Tongue led England’s attack with five for 45 and Gus Atkinson added two for 28.

In the second innings, Australia struggled again and were dismissed for 132. Travis Head scored 46, but Brydon Carse’s four for 34 and Ben Stokes’ three for 24 kept the total within reach.

The contest also produced a rare statistical anomaly. It was the first Test in Australia since 1932 without a single individual half-century, and only the fifth such instance in Test history.

However, the result did not affect the outcome of the series, as Australia had already retained the Ashes after winning the opening three Tests of the five-match contest.

The defeat had a limited impact on the World Test Championship standings. Australia remains at the top of the table with 72 points from seven matches and a points percentage (PCT) of 85.71, despite the loss.

England, meanwhile, has 38 points from nine Tests. Their points percentage has improved slightly following the win, but earlier defeats in the current WTC cycle have kept them in the lower half of the standings.
