KP Bans Illegal Gold Mining in 4 Districts

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has imposed a ban on mineral extraction in Swabi, Nowshera, Kohat, and Karak under Section 144 to curb illegal mining and protect rivers from environmental damage.

According to officials, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department imposed the ban to prevent illegal gold mining and protect natural resources.

An official notification strictly prohibits gold mining and extraction along the banks of the Indus and Kabul rivers.

The government has authorized district administrations and police to enforce the ban and seize machinery, vehicles, and tools used in illegal mining operations.

Authorities warned that violators will face strict action under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code, including fines, imprisonment, and confiscation of equipment.

Officials said illegal mining causes severe environmental degradation and is often linked to smuggling networks and law-and-order threats. The move aims to strengthen oversight, protect lives and property, and preserve ecological balance.

The decision follows an earlier 60-day mining ban in Karak, imposed on September 22, amid a surge in illegal placer mining along riverbeds, such as Zarra Khel.

Despite Karak’s rich mineral resources, including coal and gypsum, authorities continue crackdowns to prevent environmental damage and smuggling.

Officials emphasized that the temporary ban will deter unlawful activities while the government considers long-term, environmentally responsible mining regulations.
