Bhutan’s left-arm spinner Sonam Yeshey has created history by becoming the first bowler ever to claim eight wickets in a T20 match, setting a new world record in the shortest format of the game.
The 22-year-old achieved the world record feat during the third T20 International against Myanmar in Gelephu Mindfulness City. Sonam delivered a devastating spell, finishing with 8 wickets for just 7 runs in his four overs, as Myanmar were bowled out for 45 runs while chasing Bhutan’s total of 127 for 9.
He has now taken 12 wickets in four matches, with one game still remaining in the series. Before Sonam’s achievement, the best bowling figures in men’s T20 internationals stood at seven wickets in an innings.
That mark had been reached only twice at the international level, by Syazrul Idrus of Malaysia (7 for 8 against China in 2023) and Ali Dawood of Bahrain (7 for 19 against Bhutan in 2025). Even across all recognized T20 matches, seven-wicket hauls had been recorded only on rare occasions.
| Player | Country | Bowling Figure | Opponent | Year |

| Syazrul Idrus | Malaysia | 7/8 | China | 2023 |
| Ali Dawood | Bahrain | 7/19 | Bhutan | 2025 |
Sonam Yeshey made his T20I debut in July 2022 against Malaysia, where he impressed with figures of 3 for 16. While wickets did not come at such a rapid pace initially, the young spinner has now accumulated 37 wickets in 34 T20 Internationals, marking his steady rise in international cricket.
