The signing of Babar Azam by the Sydney Sixers has had a staggering impact on the team’s social media reach and the Big Bash League (BBL) 15’s early success.
Since his arrival, the Sixers have reportedly achieved over 70 million social media impressions, more than 18 million video views, and 230,000 new followers across their platforms.
The influx of Pakistani cricket talent, led by Babar Azam, is credited with energizing both local and international fanbases.
His fluent fifty against the Sydney Thunder during his maiden BBL season has further intensified excitement around Australia.
The impact extends beyond digital engagement. BBL 15 has recorded remarkable growth in both viewership and in-stadium attendance compared to previous seasons.
Live streaming viewership has surged by 131% compared to last year, while cumulative attendance across the first eight matches reached 137,607, marking the largest opening crowd for this stage of a season since BBL 7.
Average audiences per match climbed to 764,000 viewers, an 18% increase year-on-year, with simulcast fixtures averaging 912,000 viewers across platforms like Seven, 7plus, Foxtel, and Kayo Sports.
The Sixers’ popularity has also translated into ticket sales. Their dedicated “Babaristan” fan zone at the SCG has already been expanded for the Boxing Day Bash due to overwhelming demand.
Alongside Babar, other Pakistani stars have contributed to the surge in BBL interest. Haris Rauf for Melbourne Stars, Shadab Khan for Sydney Thunder, and Mohammad Rizwan for Melbourne Renegades have all played key roles in boosting international attention and energizing local audiences.
With marquee fixtures still to come, BBL 15 is on track to become one of the most-watched and attended seasons in recent years, and Babar Azam’s influence, both on and off the field, is widely recognized as a driving force behind this early success.
