PM Dismisses Senior FBR Officer Over Corruption

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has dismissed a senior Inland Revenue Service officer from service after corruption and misconduct charges were proven against him, in a major disciplinary action within the Federal Board of Revenue.

According to a notification issued by the Federal Board of Revenue on Tuesday, Riaz Ali Shah, an Inland Revenue Service officer in BS-20, has been removed from service on charges of inefficiency, misconduct and corruption.

The disciplinary proceedings against Riaz Ali Shah were initiated under the Civil Servants Efficiency and Discipline Rules, 2020, through an inquiry order and charge sheet issued on August 18, 2025. At the time, he was serving as Chief Accounting Officer in the Organizational Audit Wing of FBR Headquarters and was stationed in Karachi.

The inquiry report, submitted on November 12, 2025, concluded that 11 out of 12 charges against the officer had been proven and recommended the major penalty of removal from service.

Following the inquiry, the Prime Minister, acting as the competent authority, appointed a hearing officer and provided the accused officer an opportunity for a personal hearing on December 24, 2025. Despite being formally notified, the officer did not appear for the hearing.

After reviewing the charge sheet, inquiry report, show-cause proceedings and the hearing officer’s note, the Prime Minister approved the penalty of removal from service under the relevant rules.

In a separate notification, the FBR also dismissed Ms. Shiraza Hameed, an Inland Revenue Service officer in BS-18 posted at the Large Taxpayer Office Lahore, for issuing an inadmissible tax refund.

The actions reflect a stricter stance by the government against corruption and misconduct within the tax administration.
