Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi has enforced a two-month ban on digging roads and footpaths across the city, warning that authorities will take legal action against any unauthorized excavation.
The commissioner announced the decision on Thursday to curb traffic congestion, prevent accidents, and protect Karachi’s road and sidewalk infrastructure from damage caused by uncoordinated digging.
Under the official notification, the ban will remain in force from January 1 to March 3. Naqvi said repeated violations of previous bans led to accidents and widespread damage to roads and footpaths.
He said all government departments and private entities must obtain prior approval from the Karachi and Sindh governments before carrying out any excavation work.
Naqvi said unplanned digging disrupts development activity and causes serious harm to urban infrastructure. He added that the administration will act strictly against anyone violating the ban.
The notification stated that authorities will initiate legal proceedings under Section 144 against individuals or organizations found digging without proper authorization.
