A shocking video from Karachi’s Orangi Town has once again thrown a spotlight on the city’s dangerous, unguarded pits and manholes that have already claimed multiple lives.
The clip, widely shared on social media, shows a motorcyclist riding at night near Urdu Chowk before suddenly vanishing into a large, open pit. Police said the incident occurred on 29 December at a site dug up for a water supply line, and confirmed that the young rider was injured in the fall, with overspeeding cited as one of the factors.

According to officers, the pit was located on a stretch of road where excavation work had been carried out but never properly secured. Only after the video went viral did the relevant authorities move in to start repairs and cover the opening.
Residents told police the ground had been excavated around six weeks earlier, yet no meaningful safety measures were put in place. They complained that there were no barricades, warning boards, or reflective tape around the site, effectively turning a busy route into a hidden trap, especially for motorists traveling at night.
The latest near‑tragedy comes against a grim backdrop of similar incidents across Karachi. Last month, an eight‑year‑old boy, Dilbar Ali, died in Korangi’s Mehran Town, Sector 6‑G, after falling into an uncovered manhole filled with wastewater while playing outside his home.
Rescue teams and police later recovered his body, but residents noted that no senior municipal officials appeared at the scene, deepening public anger over official indifference.
