Govt University Makes Punjabi Compulsory Subject

The Government College Women University Faisalabad (GCWUF) has approved the introduction of a compulsory Punjabi language and literature course.

According to a press release, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Kanwal Ameen has sanctioned a two-credit-hour course titled “Punjabi Zaban Te Adab.” The course will be mandatory for undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Humanities and Languages, and Management Sciences.

University officials said the move highlights GCWUF’s dedication to promoting indigenous languages through formal education and strengthening students’ awareness of their linguistic identity.

The newly approved course aims to introduce students to the depth and diversity of the Punjabi language, its literary legacy, and associated cultural traditions.

By integrating Punjabi into the higher education curriculum, the university seeks to encourage respect for regional languages and celebrate Pakistan’s cultural and linguistic diversity.

Alternate Course for Non-Punjab Students

GCWUF has clarified that the compulsory Punjabi course does not apply to students from other provinces.

  • For Punjab-domiciled students, “Punjabi Zaban Te Adab” will be a compulsory component of their degree programme (where applicable).
  • Students belonging to other provinces will instead take an alternative compulsory course titled “Urdu: Fables, Wisdom Literature, and Epic.”

  • Where there is Saraiki Population in dominance…Multan Bahawalpur DG Khan …Saraiki should be an alternative option…6ou can’t force them to lie away from their mother tongue…

  • Should be implemented in every university of panjab and Islamabad. Instead of subjects like Islamic studies and quranic studies and pakistan studies which has no practical use in our life we need to learn mother tongue.
