The Pakistan Navy is facilitating a Pakistan–China joint oceanographic cruise through its National Hydrographic Office, according to a statement issued on Tuesday.
The navy deployed PNS Behr Masah to support the scientific mission being carried out by the National Institute of Oceanography in collaboration with China’s Second Institute of Oceanography. The Pakistan Navy said the vessel is equipped to conduct oceanographic and geophysical surveys.
The navy stated that it continues to support marine scientific research and promote maritime awareness in Pakistan’s coastal and offshore waters. Officials said the joint cruise aims to improve understanding of the marine environment and contribute to better assessment of coastal and offshore dynamics.
According to the National Institute of Oceanography, both sides signed a Letter of Agreement on China–Pakistan joint cruises for marine environment and ecosystem research on December 12, 2025, in Hangzhou, China. Following the agreement, the NIO initiated joint cruises with its Chinese counterpart to collect marine environmental and ecosystem data across all four seasons in Pakistan’s coastal areas.
The initiative will allow Pakistani scientists to work alongside Chinese researchers, analyze samples in advanced laboratories in China, and receive training in oceanographic equipment operation, data collection at sea, and post-cruise laboratory analysis.
