AMD has announced the Ryzen 7 9850X3D at CES 2026, expanding its lineup of gaming-focused processors. The new chip is a higher-binned version of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and is designed to reach higher clock speeds.
The processor had been the subject of multiple leaks in recent weeks, including references from Dell and AMD itself.
The Ryzen 7 9850X3D retains the same core configuration as the 9800X3D, featuring 8 cores and 16 threads. It also includes the same 96MB of L3 cache, which has been a key factor behind the strong gaming performance of AMD’s X3D processors.
Due to improved binning, the 9850X3D can boost up to 5.6GHz, compared with the 9800X3D’s 5.2GHz. Despite the higher clock speed, the processor maintains the same 120W thermal design power. The increase represents a clock speed gain of nearly 8 percent.
With its higher boost frequency, AMD positions the Ryzen 7 9850X3D as the fastest gaming CPU in its lineup. While the 16-core Ryzen 9 9950X3D can reach 5.7GHz, that frequency applies to the compute die without the additional L3 cache. The die equipped with 3D V-Cache typically runs closer to 5.5GHz.
As a result, AMD says the 9850X3D should match or exceed the 9950X3D in scenarios where performance depends heavily on clock speed.
AMD’s own performance data shows modest improvements over the 9800X3D. Gaming performance gains range between 3 percent and 6 percent, depending on the title, while productivity workloads see roughly a 5 percent uplift.
There may be some additional headroom for overclocking due to the higher binning, but AMD suggests users should not expect significant gains beyond the stock performance improvements.
AMD has not yet announced official pricing for the Ryzen 7 9850X3D. The existing Ryzen 7 9800X3D currently sells for around $480. Given the current lineup, which includes the $600 Ryzen 9 9900X3D and the $700 Ryzen 9 9950X3D, the 9850X3D is expected to be priced somewhere between $500 and $600.
AMD also confirmed that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D will remain in production and continue to be sold at its current price.
