Sydney Sixers Batter Calls Babar Azam the ‘Best in the World’

Sydney Sixers wicketkeeper-batsman Lachlan Shaw has heaped praise on Babar Azam, calling the Pakistan star “unreal” and placing him among the very best in world cricket.

Shaw made the remarks during an interview with former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, who asked him about Babar’s presence in the 2025/26 Big Bash League (BBL 15).

Responding to the question, Shaw said Babar is “unreal” and described him as one of the best batters in the world. The comments came as the BBL delivered one of its most high-profile moments this season: Babar Azam opening the batting for Sydney Sixers alongside Steve Smith against the Hobart Hurricanes at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

There was significant buzz around the SCG ahead of the opening stand, with fans eager to watch two of the game’s biggest names share the crease.

As the pair walked out, they received a warm welcome from a near-capacity crowd. Many young supporters leaned in from the stands, hoping for a quick high-five as Smith and Babar made their way to the middle. Both batters remained composed, sharing a glove tap before settling in.

The much-anticipated contest, however, was cut short by the weather. After just five overs, rain halted play, and the match was eventually abandoned, denying fans a longer look at the Smith–Babar partnership.

Before the stoppage, the Sixers reached 32 runs in five overs, showing early intent. Smith scored 19 off 16 balls with one four and one six, while Babar made 9 off 14 balls, including one boundary.

With no further play possible, Sydney Sixers and Hobart Hurricanes shared one point each. The result took Hobart to 13 points, making them the first team to qualify for the playoffs. The Sixers stayed third on the table with nine points from eight matches.
