The Punjab government has begun extending its province-wide beautification push to graveyards, with LED lighting and decorative wall art now being introduced at burial sites as part of a broader effort to upgrade public spaces.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif recently shared a video from Chiniot showing a newly revamped graveyard boundary wall featuring calligraphy, colorful murals, and LED lights.
The development has been presented as part of the government’s beautification drive, launched earlier this year alongside the “Suthra Punjab” cleanliness campaign.
Officials say the idea is to improve neglected areas and discourage visual decay by bringing aesthetic upgrades to spaces that are often left out of mainstream urban improvement plans. The wider program also includes actions aimed at reducing illegal wall chalking and unapproved writing across public infrastructure, with similar initiatives being rolled out in 39 districts.
The move has drawn mixed reactions online. Supporters argue that improving the look of public areas, even graveyards, helps build civic pride and promotes respect for shared spaces.
Critics, however, have questioned spending priorities, pointing to ongoing challenges such as child malnutrition and youth unemployment and arguing that public funds should focus more heavily on essential services.
