Massive Heaps of Garbage Outside KMC Sparks Public Outrage

A complaint about heaps of garbage piled against the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) headquarters wall has reignited criticism of Karachi’s waste management after the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) claimed the issue was resolved—only for its own “after” photo to trigger public backlash.

The complaint, shared on X, highlighted large piles of trash dumped along the KMC wall, including plastic bags, food waste, and scattered debris, with citizens urging authorities to clear the area.

SSWMB responded to the post, assuring the public that the site was being cleaned. Later, it posted an update declaring the matter closed, stating: “Your complaint has been resolved. Thanks. Team SSWMB.”

However, the image shared as proof of resolution appeared to show only minimal, patchy cleanup, with litter and muck still visible along the roadside. The update also suggested the cleanup was handled in an informal manner, adding fuel to public criticism about cosmetic “fixes” instead of proper sanitation work.

The incident has once again put Karachi’s broader waste problem under the spotlight. The city generates over 14,800 tonnes of solid waste every day, according to World Bank data, yet residents across many areas continue to report overflowing trash points, inconsistent collection, and weak municipal enforcement.

On social media, the SSWMB post drew frustration, with many users questioning how a complaint could be marked “resolved” when visible waste and debris remained at the site.
