WhatsApp is Replacing Tenor With a New GIF Provider — Here’s Why

WhatsApp is preparing to replace Tenor with Klipy as one of its default GIF providers, according to findings in a recent iOS beta update. The change was identified by WABetaInfo in WhatsApp beta version 26.2.10.70, which is currently available through Apple’s TestFlight program.

The beta confirms that the feature is under development and will roll out in a future version of the app.

Tenor API Shutdown

The move follows Tenor’s announcement that it will shut down its API services on June 30, 2026. Tenor has already stopped accepting new developer registrations.

To prevent disruption to GIF sharing once Tenor becomes unavailable, WhatsApp is integrating Klipy as a replacement provider.

Klipy Integration

Klipy is a content platform that offers a library of GIFs, memes, and stickers. It provides an official API that allows apps to search for and share animated content.

WhatsApp plans to automatically migrate users who currently rely on Tenor to Klipy. The transition will not require any action from users. Once the switch is made, shared GIFs sourced from Klipy will display a Klipy label within the app to indicate the provider.

How The Changes Affect You

At present, WhatsApp supports GIF searches through both Tenor and Giphy. Depending on a user’s region or account configuration, some users only have access to one of the two services.

When Tenor goes offline, WhatsApp will redirect affected users to Klipy. Users who already rely on Giphy will not be impacted by the change.

Industry-Wide Transition Incoming

The shift away from Tenor is not limited to WhatsApp. Other platforms that depend on Tenor’s API, including Discord, have also started transitioning to Klipy ahead of the June 2026 deadline.

WhatsApp has not shared a specific release date for the update. However, the migration is expected to be completed before July 1, 2026, to ensure uninterrupted GIF functionality.
