Spotify Will Sync Your Physical Book and Audiobook Reading

Spotify is developing a new feature for its audiobook service that will enable users to sync their progress between audiobooks and physical books, according to a new report.

This should help users who prefer to read on both mediums, physical books and audiobooks.

The feature, called Page Match, lets users take a photo of a page from a physical book. Spotify then matches that page to the corresponding point in the audiobook, allowing listeners to continue from the same spot in audio form.

Two-Way Sync

Page Match also works in the opposite direction. When listening to an audiobook, the feature can identify the corresponding page number in the physical book. This allows users to switch between formats without losing their place.

The feature was discovered in the code of Spotify’s latest app update, although it is not yet functional. Screenshots found in the app indicate that Spotify is actively developing the feature and plans to release it in a future update.

Availability and Limitations

Page Match will only work if the user owns or has unlocked the audiobook on Spotify. The feature will also be limited to regions where Spotify currently offers audiobooks.

The report notes that Amazon offers a similar syncing feature, but it only works between audiobooks and ebooks. Spotify’s Page Match differs in that it supports physical books rather than digital text formats.

Spotify has not announced a release date for the Page Match feature.
