AI wearables like Rabbit R1 and Humane AI Pin failed miserably when they launched due to their lack of reliable AI prowess and an unrealistic goal of replacing smartphones.
Now that AI has improved greatly, Apple may be attempting to do it better with a new device equipped with cameras and microphones that can capture a user’s surroundings, according to a report from The Information.
The report said the device is roughly the size of an AirTag and features a thin, flat, circular design made from aluminum and glass. Instead of replacing smartphones, it may be paired with them to bring more convenience, especially since Apple’s most popular product is smartphones.
The wearable pin would include both a standard camera lens and a wide-angle lens, along with three microphones and a built-in speaker. The device is also said to feature a physical button on one side and support wireless charging.
The project remains in the early stages of development. The report said the device could launch as soon as 2027, though plans may still change.
The rumored wearable development comes as Apple expands its broader AI strategy. The company has partnered with Google to power a more personalized version of Siri in the coming months.
Separately, Bloomberg reported that Apple plans to turn Siri into an AI chatbot integrated across the iPhone, iPad, and Mac platforms starting in September.
While many companies are adding AI features to devices such as smart glasses, watches, and headphones, others have attempted to build standalone AI wearables with mixed outcomes.
Humane previously shut down its AI Pin after the product failed to meet expectations. Meanwhile, OpenAI and former Apple designer Jony Ive are also working on an AI-focused device, though details about that project have not been disclosed.
Apple has not commented publicly on the reported wearable pin.
