Maulana Fazal ur Rehman Vows to Get 10-Year-Old Children Married to Defy Family Law

JUI-F chief Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman has sparked fresh controversy after declaring in parliament that he will defy proposed amendments to Pakistan’s family laws, claiming he would even arrange marriages for children as young as 10 as a form of protest.

Addressing the House, Fazal-ur-Rehman said he does not accept the changes being introduced in family legislation.

He alleged that he would “openly” violate the law and challenged the state’s authority to enforce the amendments, claiming he would facilitate marriages for minors, including 10-, 12-, 15- and 16-year-olds, and would personally attend such ceremonies.

Beyond the heated remarks on family law, the statement comes at a time when Pakistan is already debating tougher legal safeguards against underage marriages, particularly after the Child Marriage Restraint Act 2025.

Under the this law, a “child” is defined as anyone under 18, regardless of gender, effectively setting 18 as the minimum legal age for marriage for both boys and girls.
