Punjab Government Officially Revives Basant in Lahore

The Government of Punjab has officially announced the revival of Basant in Lahore under the banner of #PhirAaiBasant, marking a significant cultural milestone backed by strong governance, comprehensive safety planning, and strict regulatory oversight.

This initiative is rooted in the vision of Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and has been brought to life through CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif, The announcement reflects the Punjab government’s commitment to reviving the province’s cultural heritage in a responsible, regulated, and well-coordinated manner, in collaboration with relevant civic and law enforcement authorities.

Officials have emphasized that #PhirAaiBasant is the official Government of Punjab–led celebration, designed to balance cultural celebration with public safety. Basant festivities will be strictly limited to the Lahore district only, ensuring focused enforcement and effective management.

To address long-standing safety concerns, the government has introduced mandatory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that will be strictly enforced throughout the three-day celebration. These include:

  • Kites may only be purchased from government-registered stalls
  • Only cotton string (dor) will be permitted; all other materials are strictly banned
  • Motorbikes will be banned across the city for all three days of Basant
  • Public transport will be free, with over 5,000 rickshaws providing supervised free rides to facilitate safe mobility
  • Drones and social media platforms will be actively monitored to ensure discipline, compliance, and public safety

Authorities have reiterated that adherence to these SOPs is compulsory, not optional, and represents a shared civic responsibility to protect lives while celebrating tradition.

The revival of Basant under this structured and controlled framework signals renewed confidence in regulated cultural activities, positioning Lahore as a city capable of celebrating its heritage responsibly. The Government of Punjab has urged citizens to fully cooperate with the safety guidelines so that Basant can once again be enjoyed as a symbol of joy, unity, and cultural pride.
