Fatwa Issued Against Use of AI for Quran Tafseer

Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta has declared the use of artificial intelligence (AI) applications for interpreting, explaining, or deriving meanings from the Holy Quran as religiously impermissible.

According to Arab media, the religious decree (fatwa) was issued in response to a citizen’s query regarding the use of AI tools to understand Quranic teachings.

Dar al-Ifta warned that relying on AI-based applications could lead to the spread of misinformation and incorrect interpretations.

It said such technologies lack authentic religious training, scholarly authority, and deep jurisprudential insight required for Quranic exegesis.

The fatwa stressed that proper understanding of the Holy Quran must come from reliable, experienced, and recognized religious sources to preserve the true spirit and accurate meaning of Islamic teachings.

Dar al-Ifta further clarified that only well-established Quranic commentaries, renowned scholars, and trusted religious institutions should be consulted for interpretation.

It stated that AI programs cannot be considered a credible source for Quranic explanation.

Reports said the referenced AI platforms include ChatGPT. Dar al-Ifta maintained that such tools are incapable of providing legitimate Shariah guidance in matters related to Quranic interpretation.

The ruling comes at a time when debates over the benefits and risks of artificial intelligence continue to intensify across educational, religious, and research circles worldwide.
