Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) has proposed a massive salary increase of 75 to 85 percent for its officers and staff, 24NewsHD reported on Wednesday.
Under the plan, the director’s monthly pay would rise to around Rs700,000, while the director general would receive Rs647,000. Senior officials’ salaries would range from Rs400,000 to Rs600,000 per month.
The hike would cost Rs280–300 million annually, covering only 114 employees, raising concerns amid ongoing budget constraints in Punjab’s education, health, and infrastructure projects.
The proposal is reportedly moving forward without approval from the Finance Department or the Higher Education Department, despite previous restrictions. Finance officials had halted similar increases earlier, citing rule violations.
PHEC employees already enjoy substantial perks, including a 150-liter fuel allowance, comprehensive medical benefits, and a 20 percent annual increment, making their compensation higher than that of comparable provincial bureaucrats.
Critics argue the proposed hike could further strain the province’s limited resources.
