The Sindh education department has imposed a complete ban on the use of private school premises for residential or commercial purposes, intensifying regulatory oversight across the province.
According to officials, private school buildings must now be used strictly for educational activities. Authorities have declared the establishment of shops or residential units within school premises a serious violation of the law.
The department has also launched province-wide inspections of private schools. Institutions are required to submit valid structural fitness certificates, while schools operating in unsafe or dilapidated buildings have been ordered to vacate immediately.
Officials warned that non-compliance could result in the suspension or cancellation of school registrations. Schools found involved in non-educational activities may also be sealed. In case of any accident on school premises, full legal responsibility will rest with the school administration.
Earlier, the Sindh government issued strict fire safety directives for private educational institutions. The Directorate of Inspection and Registration of Private Institutions directed schools to ensure full compliance with fire prevention measures.
Under the new guidelines, the installation of fire alarms, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers has been made mandatory.
Schools must also keep emergency exits and staircases clear at all times and conduct regular inspections of electrical systems and high-risk areas. Fire evacuation plans must be displayed prominently within school premises.
The measures aim to enhance student safety, improve accountability, and enforce education sector regulations across Sindh.
Despite knowing that majority of private schools are using residential buildings in the name of campuses, they regularized it in a deceptive manner by restricting the same buildings to be used for their actual purpose i.e. residence.

Similarly, residential buildings shall not be allowed to use for commercially operated schools, as the schools causes blockages of roads, traffic congestion and much inconvenient to the nearby residents.
