The Punjab government has cancelled the official inauguration ceremony of the Basant Festival that was scheduled to take place at Lahore’s Shahi Qila on February 6, 2026.
According to reports, authorities withdrew the event to ensure strict implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) during the festival celebrations across the city.
Officials are now considering a symbolic inauguration in which foreign guests and prominent personalities may participate in kite-flying activities within Lahore’s Walled City.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari said kite flying permission has been granted to the public, while the government’s responsibility is to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
She added that special monitoring camp offices will be set up at Safe City headquarters and the District Commissioner’s office during the festival.
The minister urged citizens to celebrate Basant responsibly while strictly following SOPs to ensure a safe and enjoyable festival for everyone.
