Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari has ordered that energy-sector data be made easily accessible to the public, researchers, students, and sector experts as part of efforts to enhance transparency and improve decision-making in the country’s energy landscape.
Officials said the minister directed the Ministry of Energy (Power Division) to remove barriers to data access so that citizens, academics and industry professionals can propose evidence-based suggestions to strengthen the sector.
The minister said that easy and open access to energy data will reinforce transparency and help correct inaccurate estimates and news based on incomplete or incorrect figures. He stressed that better data flow would improve the quality of analysis and reduce misinformation about the power sector.
The move comes amid ongoing reforms in Pakistan’s energy sector aimed at improving governance, reducing losses and enhancing efficiency. Power Division has taken several measures to make the sector more transparent and consumer focused. Recent steps include the introduction of smart meters at distribution companies, which has contributed to up to 40 percent reductions in smart meter costs and is expected to generate estimated annual savings of Rs. 150 billion by eliminating incorrect readings and power theft.
The government has already begun rolling out competitive electricity market reforms and improving bilateral contract trading mechanisms, which are expected to bring more efficiency and investment into the sector.
Leghari has previously emphasised reforms to modernise Pakistan’s power infrastructure, tackle historical losses and strengthen governance. Electricity distribution companies saw losses drop significantly in recent fiscal years as part of anti-theft and recovery initiatives, reflecting a broader push toward transparency and financial discipline.
