Experts Warn as Eye Disease Spreads Across the UAE

Hospitals in the United Arab Emirates are reporting a noticeable rise in conjunctivitis cases, with more patients seeking treatment for red, itchy, and irritated eyes.

Eye specialists say the infection is highly contagious and that the increase is largely linked to environmental conditions, everyday habits, and the growing practice of self-treatment without medical guidance.

Doctors say viral conjunctivitis makes up the majority of cases, followed by allergic and bacterial infections. Specialists warn that self-diagnosis and the use of non-prescribed eye drops can worsen the condition, increase the risk of antibiotic resistance, and, in severe cases, cause permanent damage to vision.

Climate-related factors are also playing a role. Constant air conditioning, exposure to dust and sand, and prolonged screen use are making eyes more sensitive and weakening their natural protective barrier. In shared spaces such as schools, offices, and gyms, the infection can spread quickly, while poor contact lens hygiene further raises the risk.

Doctors note that early symptoms are often ignored. These include mild redness, a gritty or burning sensation, watery or yellow discharge, light sensitivity, and slight eyelid swelling. Many people dismiss these signs as simple irritation or screen-related fatigue.

Medical advice should be sought if symptoms last longer than 24 to 48 hours, worsen rapidly, or are accompanied by pain, blurred vision, or heavy discharge. Early consultation can help prevent complications and limit the spread of infection.

Preventive steps remain simple but essential. Doctors recommend frequent handwashing, avoiding rubbing the eyes, not sharing towels or eye drops, and stopping contact lens use during infection.

They also clarified that conjunctivitis spreads through physical contact and that it is a common misconception that viral conjunctivitis can be caught simply by looking at someone.
