Steve Smith Earns Surprise Call-Up to Australia’s T20 World Cup Squad

Veteran batter Steve Smith is set to join Australia’s T20 World Cup squad in Sri Lanka after being called up as cover following Mitchell Marsh’s injury setback.

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the team’s opening match against Ireland after suffering a blow to the groin during training earlier this week. Scans later confirmed internal testicular bleeding.

Although Marsh attended his scheduled pre-match press conference on Tuesday, news of his absence emerged just 15 minutes before the toss in Colombo.

Cricket Australia said in a statement that Marsh is experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort that is restricting his movement. Medical examinations confirmed internal testicular bleeding, and he will now require a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return to play will depend on how his symptoms improve and further medical advice.

With Marsh sidelined, batsman Steve Smith will travel to Sri Lanka to acclimate and prepare in case he is needed. Smith last played a T20 international in February 2024, but he strengthened his case for a recall during his recent Big Bash League campaign with the Sydney Sixers. He scored 299 runs in six innings at an average of 59.80 and a strike rate of 167.97.

In Marsh’s absence, Travis Head will captain Australia in the opener at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Marsh’s injury leaves Australia effectively selecting from 12 available players for the Ireland match.

Josh Hazlewood has yet to be officially replaced in the squad, while Tim David is being held back for Friday’s game against Zimbabwe as he continues to recover from the hamstring injury that ended his BBL season. Sean Abbott is with the team as a traveling reserve but is not officially part of the squad.

Australia’s build-up to the tournament has already been disrupted by injuries, with both Hazlewood and Pat Cummins ruled out of the initial squad.
