The Lower Chitral district administration launched the two-day Indigenous Winter Sports Festival on Monday at the scenic Sheikhandeh grounds in Bumburet, transforming the snow-covered Kalash valleys into a vibrant celebration of culture and sport.
The event highlights the region’s unique cultural identity and promotes its potential as a leading winter tourism destination.
The festival showcases traditional sports that have been passed down through generations and continue to draw strong interest. Spectators watched the high-energy spectacle of Buzkashi, along with local favorites such as Him Ghal (snow golf) and traditional wrestling.
Local athletes displayed remarkable skill in these historic disciplines, offering both residents and tourists a rare look at the ancestral sporting traditions of the Hindukush region.
“Our primary goal is to engage youth in healthy and constructive activities while ensuring our ancient traditions remain a living part of our society,” said Additional Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Isa Khan.
“By celebrating these games, we are not just preserving history; we are stimulating the local economy and inviting the world to experience the hospitality of the Kalash people,” he added.
Officials said they finalized comprehensive arrangements ahead of the event, including a dedicated stage, spectator seating, and a strong security and traffic management plan to ensure smooth operations for large crowds.
The influx of visitors is expected to significantly benefit local businesses, including guesthouses and artisanal craft shops.
