NOWPDP’s Rickshaw March at Lahore Fort Highlights Scalable Model for Disability-Inclusive Economic Growth

At a time when inclusive development is central to global policy conversations, NOWPDP made a practical demonstration of how disability inclusion can translate into economic participation, as visible through their event at the historic Lahore Fort. The Rickshaw March 2026 by NOWPDP (Network of Organizations Working for People with Disabilities), hosted by their Global Brand Ambassador, HSY, spotlighted inclusive mobility as a driver of entrepreneurship and financial inclusion for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The event’s centerpiece was a march of customised rickshaws for persons with disabilities moving from the Picture Wall to the Royal Kitchen, symbolizing the shift from advocacy to implementation. These customised vehicles are designed not only to improve mobility, but to function as income-generating assets. Through ownership and operation of these rickshaws, beneficiaries gain access to sustainable livelihoods, positioning disability inclusion within a broader economic development framework.

Launched in 2012, The Rickshaw Project (TRP) reflects NOWPDP’s systems-based approach. Rather than isolating accessibility as a welfare issue, the initiative integrates mobility solutions with entrepreneurship, skills development, and financial inclusion. Over time, the model has evolved into a scalable intervention aimed at reducing structural barriers that limit labor force participation among persons with disabilities.

The event convened Mr. Shakeel Ahmed Bhatti, Advisor to the Chief Minister of Punjab on Education, Mr. Ben Warrington, Head of the Lahore Office of the British High Commission, Sarwat Gillani, Fahad Mirza, representatives from corporate sector such as Faysal Bank and Outfitters, development sector representatives, corporate partners and social advocates, reinforcing the multi-sector collaboration required to achieve inclusive growth. A formal ceremony introduced NOWPDP’s mandate and measurable impact, followed by a national anthem performance by persons with disabilities that underscored representation and agency.

In his keynote address, Mr Shakeel Ahmed Bhatti, Advisor to the Chief Minister on Education, framed inclusion as a governance imperative. He emphasized that sustainable impact requires alignment between public policy, education systems, and employers, ensuring that inclusion is embedded within institutional processes rather than treated as a parallel initiative.

Omair Ahmad, CEO of NOWPDP, highlighted the organization’s 17-year trajectory in advancing disability inclusion across Pakistan. He underscored that economic dignity must sit at the center of development planning, noting that The Rickshaw Project demonstrates how targeted interventions can transition persons with disabilities from dependency narratives to active economic participation.

HSY,  NOWPDP Global Brand Ambassador, positioned visibility as a strategic lever for social transformation. By centering persons with disabilities as entrepreneurs and business operators, the initiative challenges entrenched perceptions and reframes disability within a capability-based lens.

Beyond the symbolic march, the event featured interactive engagement zones, including assistive technology showcases and disability simulation experiences, offering stakeholders practical insight into accessibility barriers and innovation pathways.

Operating through its Center of Excellence for Financial Inclusion (CEFI) in Lahore and province-wide programs across Punjab, NOWPDP continues to align its work with global commitments to inclusive economic growth, decent work, and reduced inequalities. The Rickshaw March 2026 illustrated how locally rooted models can contribute to broader development outcomes by linking mobility, entrepreneurship, and policy reform.

In a development landscape increasingly focused on scalable, measurable impact, the initiative offered a clear proposition that disability inclusion is not a peripheral social objective, but a core component of sustainable economic growth.
