The Elementary and Secondary Education Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has directed all education boards to stop conducting matriculation and intermediate examinations for students enrolled in private high and higher secondary schools that are not registered with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Private Schools Regulatory Authority under the KP Private Schools Regulatory Authority Act, 2017.
Officials have identified 387 unregistered private high and higher secondary schools that remain affiliated with eight education boards across the province, including merged districts. Despite lacking registration, these schools have continued to send students for board examinations.
According to official data, 196 of these schools are affiliated with the Peshawar Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, 100 with the Swat Board, 47 with the Mardan Board, 10 with the Malakand Board, four with the Dera Ismail Khan Board, 15 with the Abbottabad Board, and 12 with the Bannu Board.
The department has instructed boards to de-affiliate unregistered schools and refrain from enrolling their students for matriculation and intermediate exams. Section 21 of the KP-PSRA Act, 2017, prohibits any school from operating in the province without registration, regardless of board affiliation.
KP-PSRA has registered 11,587 private schools so far. Authorities will initiate formal de-affiliation proceedings after obtaining approval from the chief minister.
