Islamabad Electric Tram Service Routes Revealed

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has initiated plans to launch an electric tram service in Islamabad following directives from the federal interior minister. The authority has been instructed to complete a feasibility study within three months, after which the project will be presented for approval in the upcoming federal budget.

In response, CDA has begun the process of hiring a consultant to prepare technical and operational assessments. According to preliminary proposals, the first tram route will run from Islamabad International Airport to Lake View Park, connecting key urban and recreational zones.

The second proposed route will extend from Rawat to Lake View Park, aiming to link suburban areas with the central city corridor.  Officials expect the feasibility report to be finalized before June.

The electric tram system is proposed as a modern, cashless transport network featuring digital ticketing solutions.  The project also includes a plan to integrate the tram service with a proposed glass train route toward Murree, strengthening tourism connectivity and improving regional mobility.

Authorities believe the electric tram service will help reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions across Islamabad.

The preliminary plan also includes the development of charging stations and tram depots. After completion of the feasibility study, the project will move into the tendering and construction phases.
