CM Punjab Officially Launches E-Taxi Scheme

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has officially launched Pakistan’s first e-Taxi scheme, under the provincial government’s Vision 2030 framework.

The Punjab government has initially rolled out 1,100 electric taxis at subsidized rates. The pilot phase has begun in Lahore, with plans to expand the service to other districts in the coming weeks.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, the chief minister said the project is designed to build a sustainable e-mobility ecosystem in Punjab. She noted that electric taxis will help reduce fuel costs, cut harmful emissions, and offer reliable income opportunities to drivers.

A key feature of the scheme is its focus on inclusion. The government has reserved 30 percent of the e-taxis for women, a move Maryam Nawaz described as a milestone for female participation in the transport sector. She said empowering women through such initiatives remains a top priority of her administration.

To make the scheme affordable, the Punjab government is providing a subsidy worth up to Rs. 4 billion. Out of the required down payment, the government will cover 15 percent, enabling applicants to acquire an e-taxi for around Rs. 690,000. For women, the relief is even greater, with the government bearing 60 percent of the down payment.

The chief minister announced that the newly launched e-taxis would start operating on Lahore’s roads within 48 hours, with a gradual rollout planned across other parts of Punjab.

She also highlighted the province’s ongoing green transport projects, including electric and hybrid buses, and said similar services would be extended to all 148 tehsils.
