Mohammad Amir Criticizes Fans for Defending Certain Star Players

Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has criticized fans for repeatedly defending specific players whenever their performances are questioned, saying accountability should come with financial demands and privileges.

Speaking on the issue, Mohammad Amir said that whenever the names of “two or three players” are mentioned, a section of fans immediately rush to protect them. According to him, this defense often comes “in the wrong way,” with fans questioning why only those players are being criticized.

Amir explained that the criticism stems from events in 2023, when these players refused to sign central contracts offered by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He said they demanded contracts on their own terms and insisted on specific salaries, making it clear that they would not sign unless their conditions were accepted.

“They demanded Rs. 6.5 million per month and said they would not sign the central contract otherwise,” Amir stated. He added that after negotiations, the board eventually accepted their demands.

Under the revised structure, Category A players received Rs. 6.5 million per month, while Category B players earned approximately Rs. 4.5 million per month after tax. Amir emphasized that the players themselves insisted on these terms and salaries.

He emphasized that once players take such firm positions and assert their demands publicly, their performances naturally come under scrutiny.

Amir questioned the lack of results following these demands, stating that it is not appropriate to continuously defend players by claiming they have been treated unfairly when expectations rise with higher pay.

Amir’s comments come amid a difficult ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign for Pakistan. The team struggled in the Super Eight stage, suffering a crucial defeat against England that put their chances of reaching the semifinals in jeopardy.

Pakistan’s road to the semifinals now depends on other match results and possible tie-breakers after the England loss.
