The Punjab government on Wednesday imposed an “immediate and complete” ban on outdoor drone flying across the province for 30 days, citing risks to public safety and security.
In a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, the ban was enforced under Section 144 (6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, and will remain in force for 30 days from the date of issuance unless withdrawn earlier.
Scope of the Ban
According to the notification:
- A complete ban applies to the outdoor flying of drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) across Punjab.
- The restriction does not apply to:
- Small drones used for indoor activities (such as in halls or marquees)
- Drones operated by intelligence and law enforcement agencies
Cited Security Concerns
The Home Department stated that credible reports and prevailing circumstances indicate that the increasing and unregulated use of drones poses potential risks to:
- Public safety
- Public and private property
- Maintenance of public order
Authorities warned that drone activity could obstruct official duties, create law and order concerns, and disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the province.
The government termed the ban essential to ensure the security of people and sensitive installations, and to prevent any untoward incidents.
Link to Anti-Drone Initiative
The development comes a day after Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the launch of an anti-drone unit in Punjab aimed at countering potential terrorist threats.
She also directed the installation of modern digital scanners at entry and exit points across the province.
