The Power Division has reported record operational performance of the national power system in January 2026, despite challenging weather conditions and significant generation outages.
In a statement issued in response to recent media coverage on electricity pricing, the division said the system achieved its highest-ever January peak generation of 16,584 megawatts (MW), with an average generation of 12,239 MW during the month.
Total electricity generation reached 9,106 gigawatt-hours (GWh), exceeding the reference projection of 7,962 GWh by approximately 14 percent. The output also marked a 13 percent increase compared to January 2025.
The division noted that the month was marked by multiple constraints, including a 1,040 MW forced outage at K-3, a 1,180 MW forced outage at Haveli Bahadur Shah (HBS), partial and forced outages at Sahiwal Coal Power Plant, and a 300 MW refueling outage at C-III.
Additionally, canal closures reduced hydel availability, while dense fog in northern and southern regions led to transmission line trippings during the cold wave.
Despite reduced baseload capacity and lean hydrological conditions, the system was operated strictly under merit-order dispatch principles.
Thermal resources were optimally utilized, hydel generation was managed within water constraints, and transmission corridors were continuously monitored to ensure grid stability.
The division said proactive operational measures prevented cascading failures or widespread load management.
The statement added that commercial implications arising from the rebasing of reference in January 2026 may be obtained from the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA-G).
Currently, system demand is being met primarily through hydel generation supported by improved water inflows, with only one RLNG-based plant in operation.
The division confirmed that no furnace oil-based generation was used during the month, including during peak demand hours of Iftar, Taraweeh and Sehr.
The Power Division reiterated its commitment to ensuring reliable and cost-effective electricity supply to consumers across the country.
