Senate Calls for Reducing MDCAT Passing Marks

The chairman of a Senate standing committee, Aamir Waliuddin, has revealed that medical college seats in Sindh and Punjab remain unfilled.

He stated that admissions could not be completed due to the high weightage criteria set by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).

The committee chairman further said that a government-appointed special committee had fixed the annual medical college fee at Rs1.8 million.

However, some private medical colleges are charging up to Rs 3 million. He urged PMDC to pay attention to the issue of excessive fees.

During the meeting, Anusha Rahman demanded the arrangement of a supplementary examination for students who failed the MDCAT, stating that it is unfortunate for a student to lose an entire academic year due to missing even one mark.

The committee chairman suggested that the MDCAT passing marks should be set at 33 percent.

Meanwhile, Mustafa Kamal recommended that the committee direct PMDC to review and potentially reduce the passing marks and submit a detailed report.

The committee also highlighted that more than 22,000 students are unable to secure admission each year, calling it a serious issue that requires immediate attention.
