1.5 Million Users Leave ChatGPT in Protest Against OpenAI’s Pentagon Deal

OpenAI is facing growing criticism after allowing the U.S. Department of Defense to deploy its AI models within classified operations. The decision has reportedly led to a wave of subscription cancellations and user departures from ChatGPT.

“QuitGPT” Website

A website called “QuitGPT,” which is encouraging users to boycott ChatGPT and tracking departures, claims that more than 1.5 million users have already left the service. The reported exits follow OpenAI’s decision to grant the Department of Defense access to its AI models for use within its classified network.

The site features a running count of users who have quit and displays a message criticizing the company’s agreement. In its FAQ section, the organizers describe themselves as democracy activists concerned about AI companies contributing to authoritarianism in the United States. Some members are identified publicly, while others remain anonymous.

Users Shift to Anthropic’s Claude

As backlash continues, many former ChatGPT users are reportedly switching to Claude, the AI assistant developed by Anthropic. The shift gained momentum after Anthropic declined to provide the Department of Defense with unrestricted access to its models.

Anthropic has also updated Claude to simplify the process of transferring personal data from other chatbots, including ChatGPT. According to reports, Claude has moved ahead of ChatGPT in app store rankings, suggesting increased user adoption.

Ongoing Criticism

In addition to the Pentagon agreement, OpenAI has faced criticism over other government-related contracts, including reported deals involving ICE. The combined controversies have fueled online backlash and subscription cancellations.

Despite the reported departures, ChatGPT remains widely used. However, the platform continues to face sustained criticism as more users explore alternative AI services.
