Even Dumb Phones Are Getting AI Features and Digital Wallets

Among the announcements at MWC 2026, HMD Global, the Finnish company that was in charge of Nokia phones, confirmed plans to add modern smartphone-style features to its feature phones.

The company aims to expand digital access for under-connected users worldwide by introducing services such as a digital wallet, an AI assistant, and video calling. These features will roll out throughout 2026.

Digital Wallet

HMD’s digital wallet will enable users to receive, store, and withdraw funds through local payment systems. The service is scheduled to debut in India in the first half of this year, with broader expansion planned later.

The company states that the wallet will include device-level security with PIN protection. HMD developed the service in collaboration with fintech firm Kivi3 and blockchain company Polygon Labs.

AI Assistant

HMD also plans to integrate AI into upcoming feature phones. The company has partnered with Sarvam AI to build a dedicated voice-based assistant. Users will be able to perform tasks such as making calls, setting alarms, and turning on the torch using voice commands. The assistant will also provide a basic AI chat experience for simple queries.

In addition, HMD is launching a pilot project focused on elderly users. Developed with InTouch, the AI companion is designed to offer tailored companionship for older individuals. Trial testing is expected to begin in Europe before expanding globally.

HMD is also introducing video calling and enhanced messaging through its new Xpress Chat app. The application will support video conferencing using the front-facing camera, along with voice messaging, group chats, and photo sharing.
