The United States Department of State said on Wednesday that a US government charter flight transported American citizens from the Middle East to the United States, while additional evacuation flights are being arranged across the region.
Officials did not disclose the number of passengers on the flight or its exact departure and arrival locations.
The State Department said that since February 28, when the United States and Israel launched initial strikes on Iran, more than 17,500 Americans have safely returned to the United States.
About 8,500 citizens returned on Tuesday alone, according to officials.
The department added that many US citizens have also left the Middle East for countries in Europe and Asia since the conflict began.
Earlier this week, the State Department urged Americans in 14 Middle Eastern countries to immediately leave the region using available commercial flights.
However, many citizens have faced difficulties due to major disruptions in global air travel caused by the conflict.
The situation has drawn criticism from several US lawmakers, who accused the State Department of delayed warnings and poor evacuation planning.
In response, the department said it is facilitating charter flights from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan to help Americans who require assistance leaving the region.
