West Indies Team Stranded in India After T20 World Cup Exit

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy voiced frustration on X, formerly known as twitter, after the team remained stranded for several days due to international airspace restrictions triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

The West Indies squad has been unable to fly back home for more than four days as flight operations through parts of the Gulf region continue to face disruptions.

The Caribbean side had been in India for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup but was eliminated from the tournament after losing to the India national cricket team in the Super Eight stage.

Following the team’s exit from the competition, travel plans were affected as airlines adjusted routes because of security concerns linked to the military situation in the Gulf region.

Expressing his frustration, Sammy posted on X saying, “I just wanna go home.”

Four hours later, the former West Indies captain posted again, seeking clarity about the team’s travel arrangements.

“At least an update, tell us something. It’s been 5 days,” Sammy wrote.

Earlier on Monday, Cricket West Indies confirmed that the team’s departure from India had been postponed because of airspace restrictions in the Gulf region.

In a statement, the board said the restrictions were linked to security threats resulting from military action in the region.

“These restrictions are a direct result of the security threats posed by military action in the Gulf region, which has impacted several international flight routes and required airlines to adjust scheduled services for safety reasons,” the statement said.

Cricket West Indies added that the safety and well-being of players, coaching staff, and officials remain its highest priority.

“CWI is working closely with the International Cricket Council, relevant governmental authorities, and airline partners to secure the earliest possible safe travel arrangements for the squad and support staff,” the board said.
