Google has officially released Android’s native desktop mode for Pixel devices as part of the March Pixel Drop. This means we finally have a proper desktop mode, which has always been missing from native Android.
Since Google has added it to the core Android experience, all Android-based phones could get this feature in the future.
Desktop Mode has been in development since 2025 and first appeared unofficially in an Android 16 QPR release. Since then, Google has refined the experience to address usability issues and align it more closely with Samsung’s DeX functionality.
Starting With Pixels
Desktop mode is currently available only on Pixel 8 models and newer. To use the feature, users need a monitor that connects via USB-C. Once connected, a keyboard and mouse can also be paired for navigation.
The feature enables a larger external display, allowing improved multitasking on Android. In addition, Google has introduced desktop windowing support for the Pixel Tablet. Users can resize and run multiple apps directly on the tablet screen. This windowing functionality is also available when using desktop mode on supported Pixel phones.
AI and System Enhancements
The March Pixel Drop also expands Gemini integration. In its beta phase, Gemini can assist with routine tasks such as ordering food, booking rides, and creating grocery lists. Availability may vary by device.
Google has introduced new comfort display filters that use AI to soften color brightness for a more subdued viewing experience. Circle to Search now allows users to identify clothing items and virtually try on outfits.
The update also enhances the Now Playing app to better track listened music and improves the At a Glance widget by adding key information, including sports scores, to the lock screen. New custom icons are also available. As with most updates, rollout timing may vary by region and device.
